THE JADE COLLECTION

In Chinese culture, jade is highly valued, not only for it's aesthetic qualities, but also for what it represents. Jade is prized as it stands for beauty, purity and grace. It is also believed to have protective qualities and thus traditionally, jade charms and bracelets are often given as gifts to the newborn babies of friends and family. I have a small collection of jade jewelry that was given to me when I was born. They now don't fit, but I cherish them all the same!

While I don't speak Mandarin very well (and can't read a word!) and was born/raised here in America, I love finding ways to connect to my history and celebrate my mixed cultural heritage. The main way I do this is through cooking, using recipes that have been passed down through the women in my family. As an artist, it has been a delight to be able to honor Chinese tradition with this earring collection.

Jade is quite heavy (and pricey!) and with polymer clay that problem is solved! These earrings are super light weight, but still retain the look and elegance of actual jade.

When I wear them, I feel proud of my family's history and all the women who have come before me. They remind me of the challenges they have overcome and that the strength they carried is the same strength inside of me. I hope that when these earrings are worn, they remind the wearer of her own beauty, power and grace.

Hypo-allergenic, the earring hooks are gold-plated, perfect for those with sensitive skin.

Each piece is cut, baked, sanded, coated in resin, drilled and then assembled together. Designed, made and packaged in the Sowing Ground studio in Bremerton, WA.
