ABOUT THE BEGINNINGS
OF SOWING GROUND:
How Jessica Chan planted the seeds of Sowing Ground,
a small business rooted in joy"
by Aleenah Ansari
My own creative journey began as a curious kid. I was always trying to get my hands on new supplies to explore more ways to make art. Enough so, that my mom always joked I could open up a craft store from my own room! As I grew older though, I put my art dreams on the shelf to pursue a different path and through a series of unfortunate workplace situations, I wound up with repetitive stress injuries in both arms. But thankfully, I see now that all of this was a series of necessary stepping stones to the current + wonderful chapter of my life!
After moving to Washington state from California with my husband, Bryce, I found myself with few options for work due to my physical limitations. A period of unemployment turned out to be a serendipitous, liminal space that allowed me to rediscover my love for creating. Sometimes a fallow season is needed to prepare the field for planting! I was delighted to find that drawing, painting, embroidering, etc. doesn't aggravate my chronic condition. When I am creating, I am able to forget those limits and explore new ones using my imagination while simultaneously challenging myself to grow as an artist.
Now, Sowing Ground is the field in which I am planting the seeds of my dreams again. It has been a blessing to watch those seeds take root, develop and grow. The name Sowing Ground serves as a personal reminder that my life is an open field, full of potential and promise. The illustrations I create are seeds that I hope will lead to a harvest of joy and cheer as they take root in your life. In that, you are a Sower too, taking these seeds and turning them into something new. As art is shared, the harvest takes many forms. When gifted, art plays a part in the creation of happy memories. When collected, art contributes to making a house feel more like a home or adds a flair of personal expression to your office. It has the ability to uplift and inspire!
Nature reflects the strength and persistent beauty that is within and around each of us, despite living in a world that tears us down more often than it lifts us up. In creating art, I hope to embolden you to remember that you are wonderfully unique, have value and much to give. You have the power and abilities to cultivate a life that you love with the seeds you plant in word and deed!
